Our gardens are usually difficult to consider as overly mysterious, as we can usually find flowers that are well known to us and at the same time easy to cultivate, because the Polish climate is known for the fact that not all plants are treated with kindness. At least once in a while, however, it is worth considering whether to take an interest in one of the less popular plants.
Such forgotten plants can be extremely interesting. One of them is certainly the tuberose tuberose tuber - a flower that attracts attention already because it has a beautiful, intense fragrance evoking associations with jasmine, lily of the valley, garden and citrus flowers. Tuberose smells strongest in the evening, however, a rather intense scent can be easily sensed regardless of the time of day. This fragrance is not only very beautiful, but also very durable. No wonder, therefore, that the essential oil obtained from it enjoys great popularity as a raw material that can be used in the production of perfumes.
Origin and growing requirements
Tuberose was born in warm climates, so it's no wonder that it's very sensitive to frosts. With this in mind, it is not worth planting it in the ground, because it is very likely that it will not survive even this winter, which we ourselves will find quite mild. It is said to come from Mexico, but scientists remind us that there is still no hard evidence to support this thesis. Currently, it is mainly grown in India and China, but it also appears in Morocco and France. Tuberose is a demanding plant, as anyone who has tried to obtain bulbs from their own production has found out.
Of course, you can achieve this goal, but in advance you should equip yourself with a year-round greenhouse, not only properly heated, but also illuminated. It is the high thermal requirements of tuberosis that are the ones worth paying attention to in the first place. They are very important, because if they are not fulfilled, we cannot even dream of onions. Once again, the Polish climate is to blame, as its specificity means that young bulbs are not able to reach maturity. Even if we dig them out in the autumn to plant them again in the spring, they will not give out flowers but only further small bulbs. Buying new bulbs every year seems to be the most effective way to get new flowers.
Planting and maintenance
If you buy bulbs, start by putting them in a container and then covering them with a maximum of three centimetres of soil. This is best done in spring. Although bulbs are quite large, planting them deeply is not the best solution. The tuberose does not germinate too quickly, and if the bulbs are not high enough, the process will be further extended. After germination, the plant needs regular watering. The land can usually end of May. It is best if already at this stage it is characterized by a nice rosette of green leaves, which look a bit like lilac leaves, although they are shorter and more rigid.
